Choosing the Salesforce Edition That is Right for Me

This is a question that comes up more often than not. For clients who are new to Salesforce CRM, this question is: how do you choose the Salesforce edition that is right for your needs? The first thing we need to do is look at what is available. Salesforce has four tiers to choose from giving you a nice selection to choose from. Those tiers include the new SalesforceIQ CRM Starter, Professional, Enterprise, and Unlimited.

In this post we will not go feature by feature, but we will explore some key questions to ask to help in the decision making process:

  1. Are there any integrations that will be part of the system?
  2. Does your business require any automated processes such as workflows or automated approval processes?
  3. Will custom apps be needed to support business processes?
  4. Will large data volumes be stored directly in Salesforce?
  5. What type of data are you looking to manage in Salesforce?

These 5 questions are a good starting point when choosing which Salesforce edition is right for your business. The next question is how do I choose the right CRM from these questions? The answer is simple: if you answered ‘yes’ to any of the 5 questions then you need to look at Professional edition or higher. So how do you narrow it down even further? If you answered ‘yes’ to question 2, then you will want to look at Enterprise edition or higher. Enterprise edition or higher will work for all of these scenarios. You may be asking yourself, “then why would I choose Unlimited edition over Enterprise edition”? Unlimited is exactly what it says it is. With it, you get unlimited customizations, multiple sandboxes to test in, more data storage (which may be needed depending on how you answered question 4), unlimited online training and access to 100 plus admin services. For very large organizations with large data volumes, multiple integrations and a large number of custom apps being installed, Unlimited edition may be the way to go. So when would you use a lower Salesforce edition like SalesforceIQ CRM starter or Professional? SalesforceIQ CRM Starter is great for an individual or small group of users that want email notifications, contact management, a shared address book, and a way for easy collaboration with your team. Professional edition offers a bit more with in-depth account and contact management, opportunity tracking, lead management, task and event tracking, Outlook integration, and case and campaign management. Now what you don’t get with Professional edition is the automation piece. You are unable to customize your CRM to support multiple business units in terms of different profiles and page layouts and you don’t have the option for approval processes or the ability to utilize the web service API for integrations.

With those 5 simple questions the decision should start to become clearer. After choosing the right Salesforce edition, then you can start looking to see if additional cloud service will be required such as Service Cloud or Marketing Cloud.
